First Anniversary for Tilson Window
The newest stained glass window in Rosslyn Chapel was unveiled a year ago - on 25 June 2021 - by The Earl and Countess of Rosslyn.
The window was designed by Joe Tilson and made by Mark Bambrough of Scottish Glass Studios. It was installed to mark the 25th anniversary of Rosslyn Chapel Trust.
The photos below show the process - from the careful craftsmanship of creating it off site, to the scaffolding required inside and outside to install it, and from the finishing touches to the unveiling by The Countess of Rosslyn. The bold colours from the window are projected by the sun around the interior of the Chapel as also shown.
Mark Bambrough said: 'Made during lockdown isolation, I have been struck by how quickly the Tilson window at Rosslyn has captured an audience and become a focal point for public engagement. For me, however, the window must be experienced visually to understand how it has transformed the experience of one of Scotland’s architectural jewels. In projecting its mysterious imagery through divine light to create pools of vibrant colour onto the walls and floors, it challenges the most informed visitor to unravel the deeper layers of meaning in the chapel itself. As one of its makers, I am therefore delighted that it has risen to the demands of complex interpretation. In reflecting one year on, I recall vividly both the technical and artistic challenges that were required to make this window possible. Also, the ever pressing sense of responsibility to the designer Joe Tilson in striving to realise his vision tangibly. All in all, I think this enigmatic piece of public art is settling in rather nicely.'
