Reinstating the Fireplace
A new stone fireplace has been created at the far end of the Great Hall, by stonemasons from Laing Traditional Masonry, in the same position as an earlier one.
The fireplace introduces a new focal point in the Great Hall and conceals structural supports for the new roof. It features the coat of arms of the Earls of Rosslyn, carved in stone.
The fire basket was specially made for the new fireplace by Andrew Turner Blacksmiths of Penicuik.
These images show the development of the fireplace starting from a view of the ruins of the Great Hall to the finished work.
