This carving has been described as showing maize but mystery surrounds it.

Type:

Carving

Location:

In Chapel
South Aisle

Inside the arch over a stained glass window is a carving said to be maize, but this plant was unknown in Britain at the time the Chapel was built.

There is a theory that Prince Henry, the grandfather of the Chapel’s founder, travelled to America nearly 100 years before Christopher Columbus. he is said  to have shared knowledge of what he had seen with Sir William, who then incorporated some of the descriptions into the Chapel’s carvings.
